Capability Uplift

Brief

Working for an award-winning design consultancy in Australia, Tobias, I played a key role in developing a comprehensive training course and Capability Uplift program around Human-Centered Design (HCD). The course is tailored to the individual needs of organizations, including in-person and online workshops, 8 - 12 modules on an online learning platform and project-based learning. We have refined the course over 6 years, productizing the online component.

Outcome

These transformative capability uplift programs have achieved a wide range of positive outcomes for organizations including: embedding HCD and innovation into ways of working; upskilling employees including C-Level and Senior Management; developing new products lines; and disruption to traditional service delivery models.

Approach

Project-based learning and co-design

Define goals and mobilize

  • Understand goals and objectives for innovation and capability uplift through a fact finding kickoff workshop

  • Explore work culture and potential barriers to adoption through interviews with key people across the business

  • Employee ways of working mapping workshop

  • Co-designing an organizational HCD uplift strategy

  • Run a capability diagnostic to establish a baseline understanding of HCD capability and areas of focus for capability uplift

In person and online learning workshops

  • As an experienced teacher, I developed the core structure for the workshops including a balance between theory, practical activities, opportunities for social learning and individual reflection

  • Facilitation of face -to-face and online learning workshops with tailored content and facilitation notes for ongoing use

  • Training Facilitation guide for train-the-trainer cohorts

  • Method cards and workshop worksheets and miro/whiteboard activity templates for ongoing use
     

Online Learning Platforms and artefacts

  • I played a lead role in developing the structure and core content for the online course

  • I also uploaded content and managed the online learning platform

  • Content includes written theory, images, infographics, video content, case study interviews, clips from in-person workshops and assessments

  • Organizations choose 8 - 12 modules on an online learning platform, suited for their needs

  • Content can be tailored for each organization

  • Modules contain relevant HCD method cards & templates for ongoing use

  • Use of the online Community Forum is encouraged to further discuss and solidify learning

  • Subscription based model

Engagement and storytelling

  • Develop comms and engagement strategy 

  • Building a movement through "all-in" sessions where the entire organization is invited to core workshops such as "Introduction to HCD" and "Mindsets for Design"

  • Posters and promotional material developed

  • Series of emails designed for reminders of the learning schedules, upcoming sessions and releases of new modules for online learners

  • Define relevant projects for application of HCD process

  • Demonstrate HCD principles whilst embedded as a consultant in client projects
